What does ESOL stand for?
English for Speakers of Other Languages.
It may also be known as:
ELL: English Language Learners
ESL: English as a Second Language
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Language Services Programs in Gwinnett County Public Schools is to support ELLs’ pursuit of excellence by learning English and academic content in all content areas by learning Academic Knowledge and Skills and meeting state standards. As a program we strive to enhance the instructional experience of all English language learners in all aspects of the school life.
Who is tested for ESOL?
Students that have a language other than English spoken in the home are assessed for the ESOL program. Scores from the assessment determine placement in the ESOL program.
· What goes on in the ESOL classroom?
ESOL students are supported by the ESOL teacher in many ways. Daily lessons focus on a variety of things, English vocabulary, conversational English and learning grade level technical language just to name a few. The ESOL classroom is a place where students can be supported in a small group setting.
· How are students dismissed?
Students are dismissed from the ESOL program when their test scores are in the range of dismissal on the ESOL assessment and they are “proficient” on the state reading CRCT.
Students are monitored for 2 years after dismissal to ensure success in the classroom.
